What is chilean stag beetle?

The Chilean stag beetle, also known as the Chilean longhorn beetle, is a species of beetle endemic to Chile. This species is large in size and can grow up to two inches long. They have a characteristic black coloration with orange or red markings on their elytra (hardened protective front wings). Males can be identified by their large mandibles, which are used during fights with other beetles for territory and resources.

Chilean stag beetles are generally found in humid forests and can live up to two years in the wild. They feed on tree sap and occasionally on small insects. They are mostly active during the night and are attracted to light sources.

In Chile, these beetles are considered a cultural symbol and are often used in artisanal crafts and jewelry making. However, their populations are threatened due to habitat loss and illegal collection for commercial purposes. As a result, the Chilean government has listed them as a protected species.
